Considering I've not had any experience with weathering mediums I found them to be really easy to use either as a pencil or adding a little water to blend colours and get the streaking effect, although care needs to be taken when diluting as too much water removes any work you have done, once dry it's more resilient, i just bought a few to try and have now ordered some sets for particular effects, (chipping, rust and streaks), I like them as a first step into weathering my models, I hope this helps.
